When to plant
Pole beans: warm-season, will not take a frost. Plant when soil reaches 65–85°F. Dates below are averages worked out from each zone's frost dates — check your own field.
- Zone 6b (Boone NC): seed April 24 – May 15. First picking around July 5 – August 2.
- Zone 7b (Raleigh): seed April 8 – April 29. First picking around June 19 – July 17.
- Zone 8b (Charleston SC): seed March 15 – April 5. First picking around May 26 – June 23.
- Zone 9a (Gainesville FL): seed February 25 – March 18. First picking around May 8 – June 5.
Setting it up
Direct-seed in the field. Space plants 6 inches apart in rows 36 inches apart, about 1 inch deep. Expect roughly 65 days to first harvest.
Field notes
Trellis 6–8 ft high. Pole beans yield 2–3× bush beans per row-foot over the season.
How it fits each zone
- Zone 6b: good — Pole beans is frost-tender, so timing the outdoor transplant to the last frost matters more here than in warmer zones. Row cover buys 2 weeks of head start.
- Zone 7b: excellent — Pole beans is well suited to Zone 7b. Standard planting dates work with minor adjustments for microclimates.
- Zone 8b: excellent — Pole beans is well suited to Zone 8b. Standard planting dates work with minor adjustments for microclimates.
- Zone 9a: excellent — Pole beans is well suited to Zone 9a. Standard planting dates work with minor adjustments for microclimates.
