Cucumber Pest Management Calendar for the Southeast

Scouting thresholds and action windows for cucumber beetles, aphids, pickleworm, and downy mildew from transplant to final harvest.

Cucumbers cycle fast — 55 days to harvest, another 30 days of picking — so a missed scouting week is a lost crop. This calendar is week-referenced from transplant (WT) or direct seed (WS).

WT 0 to WT 2 — establishment

  • Cucumber beetles (spotted + striped). Feed on cotyledons and vector bacterial wilt. Threshold: 1 beetle/plant on seedlings, 5/plant post-bloom. Scout twice a week.
  • Row cover is the highest-ROI intervention if you have wind protection — pulls beetle pressure down by ~80%.

WT 2 to WT 4 — early vine

  • Aphids. Look under leaves at row edges first. Threshold: 20% infested leaves before treatment.
  • Bacterial wilt. Any wilting plant with sticky stem sap — cut and check for streaming. Rogue infected plants; treat the vector (beetles), not the disease.

WT 4 to WT 6 — flowering to first pick

  • Downy mildew. Angular yellow spots on upper leaf, gray fuzz on underside. Once it enters the Southeast (usually mid-June), a preventive schedule is the only path. Follow your state DMCast alerts.
  • Pickleworm. Frass at the blossom end of fruit or entry hole. Increases through July and August. Threshold: any damaged fruit at scouting triggers action.

WT 6 to harvest end

  • Powdery mildew. White powder on upper leaves as canopy ages. Extends harvest by 1–2 weeks if managed.
  • Spider mites after any drought stretch — check leaf undersides on outer rows first.

The one thing to write down

Log first-observation dates each year for every pest above. After two seasons you'll know your farm's clock — beetle pressure at day 10, downy at day 35 — and can pre-schedule action instead of reacting.
