Crop Rotation Planning for Vegetable Farmers: A 4-Year Template
Plant-family logic, a downloadable 4-year template covering tomatoes, peppers, cucurbits, brassicas, alliums, and legumes, plus how to slot cover crops without losing market windows.
Crop rotation is the single highest-ROI decision on a vegetable farm. Done right, it cuts disease pressure, smooths nitrogen demand, and lets you skip 1–2 fertilizer or fungicide passes a year. Done wrong — tomato after tomato after tomato — you compound Verticillium, Fusarium, and root-knot nematode pressure until a block stops paying.
This is a working 4-year template for Southeast vegetable farms (USDA Zones 7–9). It groups crops by plant family, then sequences them so each year's nutrient pull and residue feeds the next.
The rule: rotate by plant family, not by crop
Diseases and pests don't see "tomato" vs "pepper" — they see Solanaceae. Plant family is the unit of rotation. The big six on most vegetable farms:
- Solanaceae: tomato, pepper, eggplant, potato
- Cucurbitaceae: cucumber, squash, melon, watermelon
- Brassicaceae: broccoli, cabbage, kale, collards, turnip
- Alliaceae: onion, garlic, leek
- Fabaceae (legumes): bean, pea, cowpea
- Asteraceae: lettuce, sunflower
A 4-year template you can copy
Split each block into four sections. Each year, every section moves one slot:
- Year 1 — Solanaceae (heavy feeder). Tomato/pepper. Heavy compost input pre-plant.
- Year 2 — Brassicaceae (medium feeder, biofumigant). Broccoli or collards. Mustard cover after harvest knocks back soil pathogens.
- Year 3 — Cucurbitaceae (medium feeder). Cucumber, summer squash, or melons. Different family, different pest cycle.
- Year 4 — Fabaceae + cover crop (soil-builder). Bush beans or cowpeas, followed by cereal rye / crimson clover overwinter. Banks ~40–70 lb N for the Solanaceae year that follows.
Alliums and lettuce slot in as relief crops at the edges of any year — they share almost no diseases with the big four families.
Where most rotations break
- Tomatoes on tomatoes "just one more year." Verticillium can survive 7+ years in soil. One repeat is one too many.
- Skipping the legume year. The whole point of the 4th slot is the free nitrogen. Skipping it drops the rotation's economics by ~$120–$200/acre.
- Treating cover crops as optional. Bare ground in a Southeast winter loses topsoil and weed-seedbank control. Always cover.
Cover crop quick picks for Zones 7–9
- Cereal rye: overwinter biomass, weed suppression.
- Crimson clover: N fixer, terminates cleanly in April.
- Mustard (Caliente): biofumigant before Solanaceae.
- Cowpea: warm-season N, gap-fill between brassicas and a fall cash crop.
Wiring this into your plan
