Bell pepper spacing looks like a small decision until you multiply it by an acre. Twin-row plasticulture doubles plant population vs single-row bare ground and typically returns 30–50% more marketable fruit — but only if irrigation and disease pressure keep up.
Standard configurations
- Single row, bare ground. 6-ft rows, 18-in in-row → ~4,840 plants/acre.
- Single row, plastic. 6-ft rows, 12-in in-row → ~7,260 plants/acre.
- Twin row, plastic (standard). 6-ft between bed centers, 12-in staggered on 18-in twin rows → ~14,500 plants/acre.
- High-density twin row, plastic. 5-ft centers, 10-in staggered → ~17,400 plants/acre. Runs the fastest but needs top irrigation and fertigation.
Realistic marketable yield
- Bare-ground single row: 700–900 bu/acre (28-lb bu).
- Plastic single row: 900–1,200 bu/acre.
- Plastic twin row: 1,200–1,600 bu/acre.
- High-density twin row: 1,500–1,900 bu/acre in a good year.
Where the density math breaks
More plants ≠ more revenue if pack-out drops. Bacterial spot, sunscald, and blossom-end rot get worse in dense canopies. If you cannot fertigate weekly and scout twice a week, stay at 12,000–14,500 plants/acre.
Extended-season lift
Growers who add a high tunnel typically add 4–6 weeks to the pepper window and see an extra 300–500 bu/acre-equivalent at higher prices — worth pricing before renewing another year of open-field only.
